Andinobates bombetes

This species is endemic to Colombia. It occurs on both flanks of the Western Mountain Range, from 1580 meters to 2100 meters above sea level, in the departments of Valle del Cauca and Risaralda and on the western flank of the Central Mountain Range, in the departments of Quindío, Caldas y Risaralda (there it is possible to find it in the vicinity of the National Natural Parks Farallones de Cali and Tatamá).

It lives among fallen leaves and on bromeliads in cloud forests. The species is listed as vulnerable, condition associated with its small area of distribution (less than 5,000 km2) and the fragmentation of the ecosystems that are its habitat.

Currently, WCS coordinates the “Strategy for Amphibian Conservation” for the System of National Natural Parks of Colombia (PNNC, in Spanish), project with which it works in an integrated manner on behalf of this species in the protected natural areas Farallones de Cali and Tatamá.

Within the framework of this strategy, financed by the Zurich Zoo, WCS supports these national parks in the formulation of a monitoring program for their amphibian populations and in the training of their employees on the matter.
