This publication presents the results of habitat modeling for Mesoclemmys dahli in Colombia and the associated variables, highlighting the importance of these studies for developing and advancing targeted conservation strategies for the species. Presence records and a Maximum Entropy model (Maxent) were used, along with an evaluation of habitat characteristics where the species occurs in Chimichagua, Cesar. The species' distribution area was estimated at approximately 9,000 km² in relation to its previously known range. Tropical dry forest emerged as the most influential variable in the species’ distribution—a highly degraded ecosystem with limited protection.

This publication reports the occurrence of the Colombian mud turtle, also known as Dunn’s mud turtle (Kinosternon dunni), in three new locations in the country. Previously, this species had only been recorded in the drainages of the San Juan, Baudó, and Docampadó rivers in Chocó, Colombia. The study presents the first records of the species in the Atrato River, which flows into the Caribbean Sea, and in a third locality in the Gulf of Urabá, also in the Colombian Caribbean, expanding our understanding of its distribution range.

This publication provides information on the biology and ecology of the Colombian mud turtle, or Cabeza de Trozo (Kinosternon dunni), including taxonomy, distribution, habitat, and ecological traits, as well as the current status of its populations. The species’ threat level and the conservation actions—both ongoing and proposed—in Colombia are highlighted at the end of the document.
