Insular Pacific

This region includes three marine protected areas that are part of Colombia’s National Park System, covering a total of over 5 million hectares: Gorgona and Malpelo Islands, as well as the Yuruparí-Malpelo Integrated Management District (DNMI). These areas contain vast coral reef formations and serve as habitats for sharks (such as the whitetip reef shark), tunas, sailfish, marlins, whales, migratory birds, and sea turtles, particularly the green turtle and loggerhead turtle.

Diagnosis

Although these areas are uninhabited, they experience heavy traffic from both industrial and artisanal fishers. Illegal and incidental fishing, along with poor fishing practices, have led to overexploitation of fishery resources and the death of hundreds of non-target species, whether through subsistence fishing or for commercial purposes.

What we do

We work to strengthen conservation efforts in marine protected areas by providing technical support and implementing technological tools for monitoring and surveillance. Additionally, we develop fisheries management agreements to reduce bycatch and promote the sustainable use of marine resources.
