Saldaña River – a basin of life

Saldaña River - A basin of Life is a public-private alliance between Colombia’s National Natural Parks (PNN), the Regional Autonomous Corporation of Tolima (Cortolima), Concretos Argos, Fundación Grupo Argos, and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS).

Its main objective is to conserve biodiversity and the ecosystem services associated with water resources that generate well-being for local populations in the sub-watersheds of Amoyá, Alto Saldaña-Siquila, and Cucuana, which are part of the Saldaña River basin in Tolima.

This alliance has also been supported by organizations and institutions that have helped achieve the goals of the program, through an agreement with WCS. These organizations include the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, the Franklinia Foundation, the Presidential Agency for International Cooperation of Colombia (APC), and Hocol, through the Alto Magdalena Foundation (LAFAM). Río Saldaña, a Watershed of Life, consistently manages complementary resources with these institutions through partnerships and/or agreements for financing and/or implementing the strategies of this initiative.

Since 2016, technical and financial efforts have been combined to protect native forests, riparian zones, wetlands, springs, and promote sustainable production alternatives. Additionally, spaces for education on the appropriation and conservation of biodiversity by local communities have been successfully opened.
